First activity report

Agnese and Simona involving Ornella, an italian intern of Tulime, started approaching the topic of youcom project. We used an interactive method called opptimist/pessimist. The volunteers took opposite positions and after reading some materials and news papers they started a conversation about plastic bags ban in Dar Es Salaam. Here the description of the activitie. With the coordination of Novetha and me they came up with an original agreement between ngo and private Company producing plastic items.

The first activity group we did it concernes in a discussion between a plastic bags industry (rapresented by Agnese and Simona) and an NGO working in an environmental issue (rapresented by Ornella).
First of all we read some documents about the issue of pollution in Dar es Salaam, such as: the governamental ban of plastic bags , air pollution, water pollution, wasting of solid rubbish, soil erosion, sand mining, sawage system, dumpsites.
Each part had to defend its own position about these problems till finding a common agreement.
The NGO started to present its organization and to talk about the pollution issues of the city, in particular the problem of plastic bags.
It explained its action plain to solve this problem, proposing to convert the industrial production. The idea concerned in changing the plastic bags production into paper bags (the NGO proposed a kind of reforestation such as cutting one tree and planting two ), because plastic is made from oil and coal, materials which are both unsusteinable and non-renewable, so dangerous for the environment.
This production contributes to air and water pollution. Due to these factors in January 2017 the production was banned.
The industry replied explaining that major sources of air pollution isn’t from plastic production, but it’s from vehicles and from an unefficient public transport. By the industry sand mining could be stopped with use of plastic bags, because the production of them doesn’t need trees.
After a long discussion both parts tried to find and agreemnet according to business and an ethical point of view.
The solution found was to modify the way to product, from plastic to paper providing to change machines, buying woods from the NGO to finance differentes recycle programs, keeping the local workers.
Reading the documents we found lots of technical informations about the pollution In Tanzania, in particular in Dar es Salaam.
Acting the two parts we understood how dfficult can be to mantein a position, to be ethical and to defend a business too. Last but not least, we discovered how can be easy to corrupt an NGO.
